The Flea is the most
powerful leaper in the Animal Kingdom. It may be tiny, but its
muscular back legs give the flea a prodigious leaping capacity.
The average flea (there are over 2,000 species) can leap vertically up
to 7 inches and horizontally up to a foot. When you bear in mind
that the body of a flea is generally between 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch
(about 1.5 to 3 mm) their leaping ability becomes apparent. For a
human to do the same, you would have to be able to leap from the ground
to the top of a thirty-story building, or be able to do a standing
broad jump that would take you over 500 feet away!
So the next time you
encounter a flea, be impressed with this tiny creature. Then deal
with it appropriately. It is, after all, a blood-sucking parasite
that can easily spread disease, like they did in Europe during the
middle ages.
